From all around the world the BMX and mountain bike riders descend on the smelly (but lovely) kiwi town of Rotorua to enjoy the bush tracks on offer to riders… yes Rotorua is the one with the geysers and smell of sulphur aka… rotten eggs.

This year I thought I’d take my nephew to Crankworx as his birthday gift… hoping to see the Slopestyle day of tricks the riders can do. Sadly the weather decided to play its part and the schedule got moved around. While we didn’t get to see the Slopestyle we did check out the Downhill Finals and get to wander the grounds.

Heading up to the top of the course, we saw the starting point of the downhill race. It was pretty cool to see the views going up on the gondola and then out from the restaurant at the top. Wandering around the farmland at the top we got to see some resident alpacas and riders taking a few jumps in upper part of the course.
Then down at the finish line it was neat to see the riders jump on the last hill to zoom down to the finish line. Glad to see a Kiwi guy won the Downhill race too!

The Crankworx World Tour goes through Rotorua, New Zealand. Les Gets, France. Innsbruck, Austria. And finally back to its home base in Whistler, British Columbia.

Next year, think I’ll buy tickets on the day and keep the entire weekend open just in case the Slopestyle event gets moved again. It’s a pretty cool day for anyone keen on adventure sports like mountain biking and BMX.
