Wanaka Hiking Mount Iron

Sometimes it’s difficult to comprehend such beauty and this road trip has had those moments over and over again. Wanaka didn’t disappoint.

I fell in love with this small town a few years ago when I did a day trip from Queenstown. Lakes, snowy mountains, beautiful landscapes and a town that was small enough not to feel overwhelmingly touristy.

My Wanaka stay started with a morning hike up Mount Iron to enjoy 360 degree views of Wanaka and the surrounding areas.

It is a rocky mountain standing 240m tall, carved from glaciers. It holds views of Cardrona and Mount Aspiring National Park for mountain lovers, as well as Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea. You’re honestly spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful landscapes.

It’s 4.5km and you can either do the loop or go up and down the same way. It takes about 1.5 hours, but I highly recommend bringing a snack and water up to sit and enjoy the views from the top. It’s a bit steep, but still family friendly.

I’d love to go back and do the hike at sunset, but in the meantime I still had beautiful mountain views from my hotel…
