Being awestruck at Iguazu Falls in Brazil and Argentina

Stepping foot onto the first viewing platform in Brazil after a long (slightly torturous) nightbus experience, I couldn’t help but open my jaw in awe at the sheer size and volume of Iguazu Falls.

They blow Niagara Falls and Victoria Falls out of the water. Iguazu Falls just keeps going and going. It covers three borders – two of which I made sure I visited: Brazil and Argentina.

Visiting the Brazil side was slightly exhausting to get to, but relatively easy. I took a nightbus down from Sao Paulo to Foz do Iguacu, then a bus to the local bus station. Still heaving my backpack and camera bag I boarded another bus to then take me to the falls. There were lockers at the falls on the Brazil side, so this meant I finally got rid of my bag. Breakfast and another bus later and I was standing on the first platform (of many) that give the grand overview of the falls.

I was so pleased that I made the time to visit the Brazil side and not just the Argentina side of the Falls as many people do.

The next day, Argentina provided an up close view of the falls.

Getting up early I did the 3.5km Sendero Macuco track to Salo Arrechea. It was a very quiet bush walk and I couldn’t help but hope I didn’t meet any deadly animals. Sure enough, I didn’t even meet a Toucan, which I’d been dying to meet!

After 2 hours of solid walking I found an ice cream and made my way to the Upper Trail. This trail allows you to walk along the top and over some of the waterfalls. The platforms were incredible, no idea how they would have been able to be created safety.

The Lower Trail got a bit busier, but I still felt it could be so much worse. I had the entire day so I was in no rush. This trail took you along the middle and bottom of the falls.

Unfortunately the railway wasn’t working so I could take that us to the very top of the falls, but I did manage another ice cream since everything else to eat was so expensive.

After a busy two days, I’m now on my way on yet another night bus down to Buenos Aires, wish me luck!
